Before leaping on ahead it is always wise to be certain that earlier work has been thoroughly understood. These pages are a good check to ensure children understand the vocabulary used for subtraction, whilst working with small numbers. The activities all use number lines to help with counting back.
A little bit of revision. Use the number line to take away from numbers up to 20.
Check that 'take from' is understood by counting back along the dog number line.
Some more subtracting. Complete all ten correctly for an on screen reward and printout.
Make sure the 'subtract from' is understood. The number line can be used to count up or count back.
The term, 'Less than' can be used to ask subtraction questions. Probably the easiest way to answer these is by counting on. Eventually children will be expected to know the answers 'off by heart'.
We continue with our maths vocabulary with 'What is the difference between...?' Again counting up or down are the easiest ways to work out the answers.

No number line here, so much harder. Because we are subtracting whole tens, the units will always stay the same.
