Recognising and counting coins and notes.
Coins are a superb resource to help with counting, addition, subtraction etc. Lots of time needs to be spent with practical work counting coins, making totals and finding how much more is needed to make a total. Notes are also introduced this term.
Unitising
Introducing the idea that groups containing or representing the same number of things can be treated as ones. For example, a 10 pence coin represents ten1 pence coins. One item does not need to represent a value of one. With coins one item could represent 2, 5 or 10. This idea is called “unitising”.
