Fraction Worksheets for Primary Children
Many children, and indeed adults, struggle when working with fractions and the rules that seem to mysteriously govern them. Denominators, numerators, equivalent fractions and improper fractions are just some of the baffling terms linked to the ‘magic rules’ that somehow guarantee success, e.g. ‘divide by a fraction by turning it upside down and multiplying’.
If children are to understand and use fractions with confidence it is important that they get off to a good start and we have plenty of great worksheets from Year 1 up to Year 6 that really help with this. All our worksheets have been written by three primary maths teachers with over 60 years of teaching between them.
Year 1 Fraction Worksheets
To begin with, in Year 1, fractions are kept quite simple. Children will be shown that a half is one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity and that a quarter is one of four equal parts. Plenty of practical practice colouring a half or a quarter of a shape, dividing a set of objects into two or four equal piles is needed. Another important part of this year's work is counting in halves.

Year 2 Fraction Worksheets
Probably the key to understanding fractions is equivalence, which is introduced in Year 2. During Year 2 children will learn to recognise and name thirds, quarters and three quarters of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity. They will learn to write simple fractions and recognise simple equivalences e.g. two quarters is equivalent to a half.

Year 3 Fraction Worksheets
Finding simple fractions of numbers and shapes continues in Year 3 and more fractions are introduced, including tenths. This is usually done by dividing an object into 10 equal parts; one part being one tenth. Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator is also introduced for the first time, with answers up to one whole one.

Year 4 Fraction Worksheets
An important aspect of fractions in Year 4 is the equivalence between fractions and decimals, especially with tenths and hundredths. Adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator is continued, with totals of more than one whole one.

Year 5 Fraction Worksheets
There is a great deal of fraction work to be covered in Year 5 including mixed numbers and improper fractions. Children will compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number and multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers. Percentages are also introduced as the number of parts per hundred. If children have not understood the earlier work it is here that they will really struggle.

Year 6 Fraction Worksheets
Finally, in Year 6, comparing and ordering fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions are all covered, including writing the answer in its simplest form and there will, without doubt, be several fraction questions in the KS2 Maths SAT Papers.
