Year 3 and 4 Time

Real progress is made with telling the time in Years 3 and 4. By the end of Year 3 children will be expected to know that there are 365 days in a year, 52 weeks and 12 months in a year, 7 days in a week and that a day is 24 hours long.

They will also be expected to know that there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour.

Children will learn to read the time on a clock face, both digital and analogue (with hands) to five minutes and then a digital clock to the minute.

Plenty of oral work is necessary for these activities - ask questions such as "What time will it be in half an hour?" or "What time do you go to bed?" etc. Large calendars, days, months and clock faces showing the time can be put up around the room as a reminder.

Finding lengths of time can prove to be quite tricky for Year 3 children when dealing with hours and minutes rather than just minutes such as our ‘How long?’ set of pages.

New work on time in Year 4 will concentrate on the reading the time using a 24 hour clock, as well as being familiar with a.m. and p.m. Children will be expected to convert time from analogue to digital clocks as well as converting between hours and minutes. Plenty of work here!
