How many ways can you make 10 by adding 3 numbers? Are there more ways of making 20? Two of these pages have a number line to help whilst two don’t.

These mini investigations are all about logical thinking, trying things out, working in a systematic way, recording information and checking that results have not been duplicated. They should also be fun. Most young children will not work in a systematic way, will repeat results and miss results – that is to be expected. But, over time they should begin to develop these skills. A key part of this is to begin to make their own rules eg I’m going to start with the lowest possible number in the first box.

There are more possible ways of doing these than space on a single page, so you may need to use extra paper or print the page more than once.
