What’s New? Maths Worksheets on Adding 3 Numbers

July 22nd, 2009

add_3_numbers_1

Once children are really happy with adding two 1-digit numbers then they can move on to adding three small numbers mentally. There are various strategies that they can use to help them.

Probably the best strategy of all is to start with the largest number, and this should be the case for the majority of questions. Sometimes they might choose to start by adding two other numbers because they already know the answer and then count on the third number. Another strategy to use is to look for pairs of numbers which make 10.

This set of worksheets is part of our new section on ‘Superbrains’ which is developing quickly and is aimed at slightly older children who are moving into Key Stage 1.  Why not sign up now for completely free use of well over 1000 more maths resources?

What’s New? Maths Worksheets on Empty and Full.

July 15th, 2009

empty_or_full

Whether it is bath water or a jar of sweets, the terms empty and full are very important when talking about capacity. This is an area of maths which is quite interesting with young children. They will decide which container holds the most by its height rather than size and it is well worth spending some time filling different containers with the same amount of water.

Try filling a tall glass with three cups of water and a short, fat glass with four cups of water so that the tall glass has a higher level of water. Even though a child knows that there are only 3 cups of water in the tall glass and 4 in the  short glass, they will still say that there is more in the tall glass. Fascinating!
